Why so many people are owed money
Monthly wage tax is calculated mechanically. It does not know about your commute, your home office, your moving costs, your insurance or the months you were not yet in Germany. Every one of those reduces your actual tax — the return is where the reconciliation happens.
- You arrived or left during the year and earned nothing in Germany for some months.
- You changed jobs, had unpaid gaps or received parental benefits.
- You commute, work from home, bought work equipment or paid for training.
- You moved to Germany for a job — relocation costs are deductible.
- You paid for childcare, household services or craftsmen at home.
How far back you can claim
If you are not obliged to file, you can generally submit a voluntary return for the four preceding calendar years. Years you never filed are therefore often still recoverable — worth checking before the oldest year drops out on 31 December.
How long the refund takes
Processing times vary by tax office and season. Many returns are assessed within a few weeks to a few months; returns involving foreign income or first-time filers can take longer because the office asks follow-up questions. The refund is paid to the German or SEPA account you state in the return.
Students, interns and people leaving Germany
Students with a part-time job or internship frequently had wage tax withheld even though their annual income stays below the basic allowance — that tax usually comes back in full. People leaving Germany mid-year are in a similar position: the allowance applies to the whole year, the income only to part of it.
Leaving the country does not end the right to file. You can submit the return from abroad, ideally with a German representative so letters from the tax office reach you.
Frequently asked
Can I get a tax refund in Germany as an employee?
Very often yes. Most employees who file a return receive money back, because monthly wage tax ignores deductible costs and part-year employment.
How much is the average tax refund in Germany?
It depends entirely on your situation. Commuting, relocation and part-year employment are the items that usually make the biggest difference; we estimate your case in the first call.
Can students get a tax refund in Germany?
Yes. If your annual income stayed below the basic allowance, wage tax withheld from a student job or internship is usually refunded in full.
Can I still claim a refund after leaving Germany?
Yes. The return can be filed from abroad for up to four years back, as long as you were not obliged to file earlier.
