ELSTER for expats: what the German tax portal does

ELSTER is the tax office’s secure digital channel. It transmits what you enter; it does not decide whether a treaty article, deduction or VAT rule is correct.

What ELSTER is used for

Individuals and businesses use it for registrations, returns, advance filings, messages and certificates. Many business filings must be electronic.

Registration takes preparation

Create the account early, use the exact identity data and store the certificate securely. Postal activation can be part of the process.

  • Personal tax ID or organisation data.
  • Current registered address.
  • Secure certificate storage.
  • Access controlled for advisers and staff.

Portal access does not solve tax classification

ELSTER cannot tell a freelancer whether an activity is commercial or which country taxes a cross-border salary. Those decisions belong before the numbers are entered.

Frequently asked

Is ELSTER available in English?

Parts of the information may be accessible, but many forms and workflows remain German-focused.

Can I file without ELSTER?

Some individuals use approved software, while many business submissions still pass electronically through ELSTER infrastructure.

Should I share my ELSTER certificate?

Treat it as a sensitive credential and grant access only through controlled processes.
