Finanzamt

The local German tax authority that assesses and collects your income tax, VAT and trade-related taxes.

← All terms

Your Finanzamt is determined by where you live. If you run a business, the office responsible for your business location can be a different one. Every letter you receive carries the name of the office, your tax number and a case worker or department.

Most communication today runs through ELSTER, the online portal. Letters still arrive by post, and deadlines usually start with the date on that letter, so do not leave them unopened.
